| Active Learning
We began the year studying the various forms of money, including
changes in US currency. Students were assigned to design their own
currency. Then we moved into the basics of economics, such as goods
and services, supply and demand, and used some simulation activities
to reinforce the lessons. By the second term, we began studying
banking and interest. In addition, students had to draw a career
from a hat, and learn about gross salaries, calculating deductions
and taxes, and making budgets. The fun began when students started
receiving a monthly paycheck. They learned to use a check book,
pay four basic bills, and deal with a "Lifecard" expense.
Sometimes the card was a bonus, sometimes the students had to switch
jobs! We continue with the monthly paychecks, and have been working
on an entrepreneurship project. Students partner up to create their
own business plan, research materials, figure costs, create samples,
and finally give a presentation. And once in a while, students must
deal with a credit card emergency. They don't like having to carry
a balance, so we are planning a card cutting party in June!
Active Results
These activities are so engaging, that students are focused and
having fun. Quiz results have improved. To see twelve year olds
pondering the difficulties of balancing a check book, finding money
for emergencies, and challenging a federal 1040EZ form, is inspirational
to this veteran teacher.
