Should you start a business?
Starting a business is a big decision and it will have a huge impact
on your life. The potential rewards are great, but so are the demands.
Are you ready to start a business?
Required Personality Traits
Some personality traits are more conducive to a successful business.
Take an honest assessment of your personality to make sure you have what
it takes to start a business.
- Self-reliance - There is no lead to follow, no one else to tell you
what to do. This is one of the attractions of entrepreneurship. You’ll
need to outline your own projects, set your own goals, figure out how
to achieve them and solve your own problems.
- Work well with others - It’s a cliché, but businesses are built
on relationships. You will probably not see eye to eye with everyone
you encounter, but a successful business owner can put his or her
personal feelings about someone aside to accomplish what they need
to do.
- Decision-making - You may have people to advise you on important decisions.
But the final decision is always up to the owner. These decisions don’t
always have clear options, often need to happen quickly and many times
have a large impact on your future. Can you be decisive under pressure?
- Stamina - A successful business takes a lot of hard work, especially
in the beginning. Will 12-hour days six or seven days a week burn
you out? This isn’t always the case, but you have to be prepared
for this possibility.
- Organizational skills - Proper planning and continued organization
are keys to a successful business. Time, money and inventory are your
lifeblood. Make sure you know how to distribute them effectively.
- Motivation - What keeps you going in tough times? As the saying
goes, “When
the going gets tough, the tough get going.” But the saying
doesn’t
ask why. Look at your motivation for starting a business. Is it strong
enough to make you tough in tough times?
- Family Status - Because a business takes a lot of time and energy,
it will affect anyone whom you regularly give your time and energy to.
If you have a family, discuss your aspirations with them. Let them know
what to expect. Businesses can also create financial strains. Be prepared
to tighten the family budget belt for a few years until your business
starts giving more than it takes.
