U.S. Senator Tim Johnson Joins Visa Inc. In Donating Mobile Computer Labs, Financial Education Resources to South Dakota Schools
Award-Winning Financial Literacy Program to Help Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School (Eagle Butte) and Longfellow Elementary School (Sioux Falls) Students Invest in Their Futures
San Francisco, CA - October 15, 2008 - Visa Inc. and U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced today that this week new mobile computer labs are being donated to Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School in Eagle Butte and Longfellow Elementary School in Sioux Falls. The 10 Apple iMacs being given to each school are laptops, which allow students and teachers to use them throughout the school. The laptops are also loaded with Visa's award-winning financial education program, Practical Money Skills for Life.
Senator Johnson joined Visa at today's announcement at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School in Eagle Butte, which included a demonstration of the Practical Money Skills for Life program by Cheyenne-Eagle Butte students. On Thursday, October 16, Senator Johnson and Visa will hold a similar event at Longfellow Elementary School in Sioux Falls.
"Financial illiteracy is a serious problem facing our nation and the most effective way to combat it is to ensure that parents, schools, government and the private sector form a united front in this effort," said Senator Johnson. "I want to thank Visa for giving students in my State access to this money-management program and new computers that will help give them a roadmap to financial success."
"We are grateful to be receiving this new mobile computer lab and access to Practical Money Skills for Life," said Bureau of Indian Education School Supervisor and Acting Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School Principal, Dr. Nadine Eastman. "I know that our teachers and students will benefit from Visa's generosity and expertise."
"We truly appreciate Visa's generosity in donating this program and the computers to our school," said Longfellow Elementary School Principal, Jeff Sheets. "We will be able to begin to set our older students on the path to financial literacy with the Practical Money Skills for Life Program. It is important that financial literacy starts early, and we commend Visa for helping make this happen. We will also be able to utilize the computers with all of our students to work on 21st Century skills related to research and analyzing information."
As part of its ongoing outreach efforts to promote early and continuous financial education, since 2000, Visa has helped to bridge the digital divide by donating computers to high schools around the country and providing schools with the Practical Money Skills for Life curriculum. In addition, Visa has provided teacher training on the program so that educators can maximize the program's many valuable resources and benefits.
"An important part of Visa's commitment to financial education is focused on young people because it is critical that students understand financial basics before graduating high school," said Jason Alderman, Visa's Director of Financial Education. "Visa is proud to be working with leaders like Senator Johnson in their efforts to help ensure that students in South Dakota are prepared to make wise financial decisions throughout their life."
Practical Money Skills for Life (www.practicalmoneyskills.com) is a free program that is available in English, Spanish and Chinese.
